Drop shot fishing for bassDrop shot fishing for bass is the bass fishing technique that is creating a lot of interest in South Africa at the moment.
The drop shotting technique was developed in Japan due to the heavy pressure that most Japanese bass fishing venues have had to endure. The bass have got a lot smarter and the Japanese responded by creating a new technique to snare these elusive fish.
The drop shot fishing technique uses a plastic lure (worm, fluke, grub etc) that is fished on a small hook through the nose/head of the lure with the point exposed facing upwards. Below the hook at about 50cm is a weight.
The drop shot rig is then cast into or just past the target area and then moved into the target area. The technique is to leave the weight in the target area and then use the rod tip to move the lure in the target area. This ensures that the lure remains in the target area for a longer period when compared to a lure that passes through the target area as its retrieved.
Drop shot fishing in South Africa often refers to the normal jig head and plastics method of fishing as well as the drop shotting method developed in Japan.
The drop shot rod is normally a medium power 6ft 6in or 7ft rod with a regular action used with a spinning reel or a baitcast reel if you prefer.
