Hennie Papenfuss's interest in fishing started way back in 1978 when Hennie was introduced into the sport by his father Ruben Papenfuss, who was at that stage a Provincial bank angler. Hennie's own provincial fishing career started in 1986 at 12 years of age when he was selected for the Northern Transvaal Junior B team. Hennie also represented Northern Transvaal Provincial teams until the age of 18.

In the National Championships at Roodeplaat Dam in Dec 1991, Hennie finished 3rd out of a total of 144 anglers. At the Springbok trials that followed he ended first, and was awarded Junior Springbok Colours. In the same year Hennie won the title of SA Casting Champion. and was also awarded senior Springbok colors for casting. He also represented South Africa in the World Fishing Championships in Luxembourg in August 1992, and also participated in the World Casting Championships in Plzen Czechoslovakia in September of the same year. Hennie spent a total of two months in Europe during 1992. Up to date Hennie Papenfuss have held various provincial, and National Angling Records, some of which are still standing to this date.

Casting
Hennie started casting in 1989, and was crowned South African Senior Champion for the first time in 1991. Up to date he has been named SA Casting Champion 13 times, and holds 13 out of a possible 18 of the National records. Hennie also won the German Junior Championships in Laupheim, Germany 1992, and represented South Africa at the following World Casting Championships:
Plzen, Czechoslovakia 1992
Switzerland 1994
South Africa 1996
World Games Lahti, Finland 1997
Nova Zamky, Slovakia 1998
Kalmar, Sweden 2000
World Games Akita, Japan 2001
World Games, Germany 2005

Hennie's best result to date was a 4th position in the single hand Spinning Distance event in Slovakia, 1998. His most memorable record was casting over 70 meters with a single handed fly rod in 2002, a feat never before achieved on the African Continent, and as far as we know, in the Southern Hemisphere.

European Style Fishing
After returning from Europe in 1992 Hennie adopted, incorporated, and mastered many of the European Style fishing methods. During his stay in Europe he was tutored in the art of Pole fishing by a German Master Angler, Mr. Karl Heinz Kuhne, knowledge that he later used to develop a unique style of Pole fishing suitable for local conditions. Boilie and particle fishing for Carp was also part of the experience he obtained in Germany.

Artificial lure fishing
Hennie's first success with artificial lures dates back to the mid eighties when he caught his first catfish on lure.

Fishing off the Float tube for Catfish and Bass remains one of Hennie's favorite past times. During July to December 2000 he caught and released more than 1000 Catfish off the float tube with lure in Roodeplaat dam. Each fish was witnessed. Catching Catfish on fly remains a big favorite, but he has caught many other species like Bass, Yellowfish, Trout and various saltwater species on the fly as well.

Light Tackle Boat Fishing
Hennie Papenfuss started fishing LTB in 1998. Since then, he has represented Gauteng North 3 times at the National Inland Championships. Hennie's best result was in 2001 when he finished in 2nd position out of a group of 80 Anglers. In 2000 he caught a Spanish Mackerel of 18,12 kg on 4kg line in an off shore competition. The fish was only 150grams off the National record. Hennie was awarded his inland colours for LTB in 2002.

Hennie Papenfuss's personal heaviest bag in an 8 hour session was 150kgs. Most fish caught in a 8 hour session 78 Carp, 6 Yellow fish at Witbank Dam in 1999.
