FISHING REPORT 10TH APRIL 2010.
As far as angling is concerned the Easter week end was one of the better one's. The weather played its part for holiday makers and locals alike.
Ski Boats that fished in and around the Aliwal Shoal over the past week end had some fantastic fishing as the shoal literally came alive with fish.

Angling
As far as angling is concerned the Easter week end was one of the better one's. The weather played its part for holiday makers and locals alike. Shad came on the bite at most of the known spots along the south coast and places like Toti, Winkle and Scottburgh saw hundreds of anglers fishing, mostly for shad and they were not disappointed as these fish came on the bite during the early morning sessions. The Durban area also started producing shad and reports from the La Mercy area suggest that these fish have started making their presence felt up there.
As far as the inedibles are concerned anglers are still having some great fun with the big flatfish on both north and south coasts. The Zululand coastline is still steadily producing the diamond skates and a few very big sand sharks. Terry Nel from Port Edwards reports that although fishing there is still quiet, some big pulls are being lost at night off deep water points. Perhaps still a sign that the baitfish are around and their predators are moving close inshore at night.
A holidaymaker was proud to report that he landed a Salmon of + - 12kg with a pic on his cell phone to prove it. Otherwise only small reef species are being caught and the shad are late again. Further down the coast the Transkei deep water points are yielding some great shark angling. A few oversize ragged tooth sharks have come out at Port St Johns and at The Hole In The Wall areas. Other sharks that are coming out are some average size grey, hammerhead and spinner sharks. Shad down there are feeding freely at almost all known spots and some big fish in the 3 kg range are quite common.

Wahoo in particular were abundant with most boats getting one or two. Some big specimens in the 30 kg range were also boated. Apart from the wahoo there were a lot of big couta. Dorado and yellow fin tunny as well.

The Annual Pennington Eater Classic
The annual Pennington Easter Couta Classic was held in near perfect conditions with over 30 boats and 88 anglers competing. The couta did not disappoint as most boats got good numbers together with some nice size tunny.
The first prize could not be awarded as there was a discrepancy, but the 2nd prize was a good couta of 20, 08 kg caught by Jacques Hully, 3rd place was closely contested by Carl Hasseldt with a fish of 19.16 kg, 4th place was a junior Ryan Pellew with a fish of 18, 6 kg, 5th place was also the first prize in the Ladies section which went to Maryke Du Plooy with a good yellow fin tunny of 14, 22 kg.

ESA fishing shows on TV
Don’t forget to watch the action packed ESA fishing shows on TV. These shows feature both saltwater and bass fishing and are aired on Super sport 1. The ESA Saltwater show will be broadcasted weekly on Thursdays between 19h30 and 20h30, and the ESA Bass show will air weekly on Tuesdays between 19h00 and 19h30.

”The Ray de Bruyn bait encyclopedia”, NO MORE SECRETS
Raymond de Bruyn from ESA extreme sports angling recently released a very informative bait presentation guide. This reference book contains some proven bait presentations with large full color photos with very easy to follow steps. Volume 1 (just launched), covers baits made using Sardines and includes some very useful information on collecting and preserving your bait. This series of reference books will comprise of 12 issues.
