Fishing Report 15 May 2010

Down the south coast Dean Pretorius tells me the shoal cob are still coming out along the lower south coast.
Allowal Shoal had a very quiet weekend with very little game fish coming out. Some nice size pompano have been caught down at Sezela, the fish I have heard of are between 5-10kgs.
Off the bluff the blacktip kingfish are still being caught on live baits, mostly blacktail and karinteen are being used.

Over the weekend Umhlanga Ski boat club held an interclub competition as well as the Durban Ski Boat Club held an under 16 competition. Both Clubs saw plenty fish brought into the weigh in. Not many huge fish but mostly the shoal size fish, which is a very good sign!

With the couta around there haven’t been many anglers targeting snoek so I don’t have much information there…

Down the south coast Dean Pretorius tells me the shoal cob are still coming out along the lower south coast. Splash rock had a good day on Monday with some hammers and diamonds being landed.  Some garrick have been showing there faces along splash rock and Foster Road. They are the smaller fish in the beginning of the year with most of them being under sized. I’m sure there is some garrick all along the south coast but still in very low numbers.

Allowal Shoal had a very quiet weekend with very little game fish coming out. Some nice size pompano have been caught down at Sezela, the fish I have heard of are between 5-10kgs. You have to be prepared to put in some hours to target these fish.

Off the bluff the blacktip kingfish are still being caught on live baits, mostly blacktail and karinteen are being used. In the Durban bay the fishing seems to be quietening down, so some anglers have been resorting to targeting mullet on bread and fly. This facet of fishing can be pretty challenging and awesome fun on light tackle.

Like I said; the couta have arrived in some numbers off Durban, the bluff, Umdloti and further north up the coast Joss Laurens caught 5 couta and a yellow fin tuna off the ski over the weekend. The fish were ranging from 5-21 kgs, and there are many other anglers who’ve had similar results.  There is a paddle ski clinic being held at The Kingfisher tomorrow which I will be hosting; all the tips on what gear to use, how to present couts and snoek baits plus basic safety. It’s free of charge and held at the Kingfisher this Saturday at 9 am.

Up north Barry Tedder tells me the shad are filtering into the normal shad spots, with the shad come the game fish to eat them so we can expect the kob and garrick to start arriving. There have been the usual stumpy’s and pompano around.

Looking at the weather sites now it looks like today and Sunday are the days to froth the water, light variable winds today and relatively warm weather with a strong south westerly wind coming through sometime late tonight. Saturday morning will be very windy but will die off by the evening. Sunday is your day to fish, flattish sea’s and light winds in the morning. The north easterly will however pick up by 10-11ish am so get in early.

Spring tides today which means a maximum change in water levels, highest high and lowest low until 2 weeks time.  High tide will be at 3:38 and 16:01. Low tide will be at 9:51 and 22:03
