Fishing Report 16 May 2011 |
|
Fishing is still pretty much mediocre, from the boats the fish are far from wild and the shore angling has been painfully slow in our local waters!
Social angling hasn’t produced much new news for me…
There are still a few yellow fin around and the occasional couta but you have to put in some hours!
Looking ahead at the weather on wind guru, it’s looking good!
Angling
Winter’s claws have definitely sunken in as the shortest day is a little over a month away and the bed seems to be just that much more comfortable!
Fishing is still pretty much mediocre, from the boats the fish are far from wild and the shore angling has been painfully slow in our local waters!
The Union anglers fished a postal round this weekend with boundaries from the Mozambique border to the southern Transkei!
Fishing south seemed to be the better call on average but DHS old boys seemed to clean up the round up north in the Cape Vidal St Lucia area… Chris Quayle landed a bomber raggie of 140 odd kgs to pretty much double the team’s score.
Wayne from Warner Angling Club landed a surprise pompano down in the Transkei, several hammer head and grey sharks were also landed!
Marlin Angling Club did well with some hound sharks and a couple greys. There were grey sharks caught off Zinkwazi; Barry Wearham landed a couple grey sharks and a diamond, several other anglers got a fish or two and Raymond De Bruyn landed a diamond of 50 odd kgs.
Social angling hasn’t produced much new news for me… Shad along the South Coast, whisperings of smaller garrick and the occasional kingfish on live bait. Up the North Coast I have even less news…
The boat angling has been quiet; it’s as if the fish have been striking over there injustice of the ski boat festivals that have running over the last couple weekends! The week leading up to the first comp the fishing was phenomenal; loads of bait with tuna and couta following! Literally three days before and it went dead…
There are still a few yellow fin around and the occasional couta but you have to put in some hours! This is however the time for the big couta, bigger baits and persistence can result in personal best’s being broken!
I have heard of snoek being all over the place but just not eating…Snoek have to eat, they just not eating what we are presenting! Keep your ears to the ground as there will be some great catches soon!!!
There is a new Jet Ski website out; www.jetskifishingsa.co.za They ran a Jet Ski competition over last weekend in Umkomaas with tough conditions and few fish but still managed to get a couple nice fish out. The results are below:
1st CJ Lategan 22.7kg couta
2nd Gary Deajager 20.1kg couta
3rd Jorg Kramer 17.3kg yellow fin tuna
4th Larry Brown (Brown Dog) 8.5kg couta
5th Mick Clarke (Codfather) 5.2kg couta
Bottom anglers should start sharpening those Kendal’s and tying those geelbek traces…the time is near! If your time is more valuable to you then you can buy Salt Water Sport already made traces on trace rings at The Kingfisher!
Also I’ve had unconfirmed but probably accurate reports of bird activity off the Southern Transkei which is a direct indication of pilot shoals of sardines.
This weekend is looking bloody marvellous to say the least…light variable winds and small seas will make for extremely comfortable conditions. If you are interested in fishing the Stealth Paddle Ski competition this weekend based from Westbrook then head to the Westbrook Ski Boat Club on the top parking lot tonight for late entries, or go to the Stealth website mentioned below. Briefing is at 6pm and you can enter there… apparently there is well over a hundred thousand rands worth of prizes!
The Stealth Paindane paddle ski competition starts on the 21st of May and finishes on the 29th. This competition is obviously a wonderful destination competition with great fishing and phenomenal prizes! Sponsors such as Daiwa, The Kingfisher, Stealth and many more…this is one to be marked off on the calendar. For more info go to www.stealthkayakfishing.co.za
Looking ahead at the weather on wind guru, it’s looking good!
Like I said, Variable winds and medium seas getting progressively smaller promise to make angling easy for all over the next couple days…so make the effort and utilise the coastline that we live on!
The Durban Ski –Boat Club fishing festivalooking good! |
