The sardines are still full up along the Durban beachfront where many nets were taken.
Garrick, kob and shad have also been caught in fair numbers along the Port Shepstone stretch.
Anglers venturing to the Transkei now can expect some excellent fishing as reports coming from this area suggest that there are lots of shad, garrick and kob around.
Ski Boats are also in on the action with some good bottom fishing being reported. Kob and geelbek have started feeding but general bottom fishing has also been good with some fair size red fish and rock cod being caught.

FISHING REPORT 21TH AUGUST 2010

Angling
The sardines are still full up along the Durban beachfront where many nets were taken. As mentioned in previous editions there is still a lack of game fish and sharks which are normally associated with the run, but there is plenty of shad around as well as a lot of diamond rays. The other activity that anglers are experiencing is that there is still a lot of garrick around and anglers targeting these fish are getting some good numbers. The odd kingfish and kob are still being caught but not in the numbers that have been accounted for in previous years.

Those anglers that target the big bronze whalers and other shark species have been greatly disappointed as these fish have just simply not come inshore. There are still sporadic reports of geelbek salmon, when anglers were still fishing off the old South Pier these fish gave anglers hours of fun as they milled around the pier for some time during the sardine run. Shad on the other hand are still coming out in good numbers on both North and South coasts. A number of very big fish have been accounted for, mostly in the 2 kg to 3 kg range but a specimen of over 7.55 kg was landed in the Port Shepstone two weeks ago. Anglers who brave the cold weather and fish at night have recently started getting some nice size kob particularly along the Umgababa and Umkomaas stretches. This particular area also came alive with yellow tail kingfish during the course of last few weeks and some in the 5kg range were landed.

Garrick, kob and shad have also been caught in fair numbers along the Port Shepstone stretch.  Anglers fishing along the North coast areas should soon start getting into some garrick as shad have started moving into the well known Northern beaches. Places to watch now will undoubtedly be the Umgeni North Bank, La Mercy and Tongaat Long Beach stretches.

Transkei
Anglers venturing to the Transkei now can expect some excellent fishing as reports coming from this area suggest that there are lots of shad, garrick and kob around. Bigger sharks have also given anglers some excellent angling particularly in and around the Mazeppa Bay area. Most of the bigger rivers down there are also producing some good fish. Mainly big grunter are being caught but smaller garrick and kob have also been landed.

Ski Boats
Ski Boats are also in on the action with some good bottom fishing being reported. Kob and geelbek have started feeding but general bottom fishing has also been good with some fair size red fish and rock cod being caught. The game fish season has stared tapering off but those anglers who pursue these fish are still getting the odd couta in the Zinkwazi area but it is now the snoek that have returned in good numbers along the North Coast. The Tinley, Westbrook and Umdloti areas have been steadily producing good numbers of fair size fish.  Further south the Aliwal Shoal and Protea banks are producing some good catches of yellow fin tunny and wahoo.

fishing skis
The fishing ski's are starting to wind down the season as couta seem to be a thing of the past and most anglers have now changed their focus to snoek. These fish have moved into both North and South coasts and when a good window of weather presents itself anglers have had some good returns.
