FISHING REPORT 24 MAY 2010
The word on everyone’s lips at this time of the year is sardines. Nature is strange and there must be hundreds of theories of why there will or won’t be a run. A few years ago these fish surprised us and we experienced one of the best runs ever. Until we receive confirmed reports from reputable authorities could we possibly report that a run is imminent. Sardines apart, anglers fishing along the middle South Coast areas had some excellent garrick angling during the course of last week and the past week- end.
These fish seem to have entrenched themselves down there. Anglers are urged to heed the law of two garrick per angler per day. The authorities have recently been ruthless on offenders and it is just not worth the fine and above all the hassle of not obeying the law. The same applies to shad, you may only catch four of these fish per angler per day. The size of these fish is still on the small side, 4 kg to 6 kg but one or two in the 10 kg mark were reported. As far as tackle is concerned, a great combination rod and reel for these great fighting fish is one of the Kingfisher Poseidon rods with a Daiwa SL reel (size 50 or 30) and Kingfisher 12.5kg line. Other than the garrick and shad, there is still other edible fish on offer.
A lot of good size pompano were landed at Toti rocks and the Isipingo areas. The main bait that was working here was whole mussels but anglers that used small strips of chokka were also successful.
News from Terry Nel from Port Edward is that fishing has been quiet there and no reports of fish have come in as yet. The surf conditions are good and water temperatures also suitable and the offshore winds in the early morning are signs of a good season ahead.

Reporting on the last postal competition fished amongst the seven Zululand based clubs, who were faced with the challenge of seeking out the best angling waters and weather conditions during the prescribed weekend. Kwambo club who travelled up to the far northern boundary made the right decision and took top weight for the weekend on 208.0 weight points, with two of their members taking the most outstanding catches for the weekend. Jeffrey le Roux landed a giant king fish of 23.2 kg also being the heaviest edible for the weekend; he went on further landing a nice river snapper commonly known as a rock salmon of 11.3 kg. This is a pending new Zululand record.
Wesley Rapson landed the biggest inedible for the weekend, a blackfin shark of 57.9 kg. All the fish where released live back into the water. Top lady angler for the weekend went to Heather Tiltmann on 22.4 pts catching a total of 10 fish. Top junior went to Brendon Andrews of St Lucia club on 17.2 pts and the top master went to Julian Pybus on 35.7 pts. Overall top angler for the weekend went to Jeffrey le Roux on 82.8 pts.
The next competition is a postal competition scheduled for this weekend 22 / 23rd May being the last postal competition for this angling calendar year. Overall club positions:

Action packed ESA fishing shows on TV
Don’t forget to watch the action packed ESA fishing shows on TV. These shows feature both saltwater and bass fishing and are aired on Super sport 1. The ESA Saltwater show will be broadcasted weekly on Thursdays between 19h30 and 20h30, and the ESA Bass show will air weekly on Tuesdays between 19h00 and 19h30.
