Fishing Report 25 October 2010

With warmer weather and sea conditions slightly improving, anglers should get some more comfortable fishing done.
Rock and Surf anglers will be interested to hear that a few decent sized sand sharks have made an appearance on the Nonoti stretch even though the water has been between 19 and 21 degrees.
Further south, fishing in the Transkei is still good but the garrick and kob have gone off the boil but as far as shark angling is concerned some good catches of average size hammerhead and grey sharks have been made in the Hole In The Wall area.

Rock and Surf anglers will be interested to hear that a few decent sized sand sharks have made an appearance on the Nonoti stretch even though the water has been between 19 and 21 degrees. The weather has been playing the game nicely even though we have had 3 small cold fronts in the last two weeks. With the shad ban in place there is not as much activity on the beaches as usual but those anglers that are fishing for brusher in particular have had some good results in the Twini and Doonside areas in the south and along the La Mercy stretch in the North.

Garrick angling along the North and Zululand coasts is still in full swing but some adverse weather conditions has put a damper on angling. However some fair weather has been predicted and anglers targeting these fish should produce some good results. We are in the throws of spring and some good catches of kob, garrick and geelbek have been made from Durban all the way up to Richards Bay. The garrick have been taken on live baits like mullet and karenteen, both have been working well.

News from Dean on the South Coast is that boat anglers have been heavily “taxed” by some huge sharks and have found it extremely difficult in landing any quality fish. The LBSA guys have caught some nice bronze bream and Splash Rock has produced some small garrick on live bait.

Transkei
Further south, fishing in the Transkei is still good but the garrick and kob have gone off the boil but as far as shark angling is concerned some good catches of average size hammerhead and grey sharks have been made in the Hole In The Wall area. Ray reported that Trankei anglers have been really fortunate as the deep water points have been producing some big sharks. Big slide baits have worked best for these toothy critters. The offshore angling has been superb with some giant coppers being landed in the Hole In The Wall area. The yellowtail have also been “busting” the guys tackle and leaving anglers with seriously sore backs. There have been reports of some good sized pig-nosed grunter in the Mazeppa area. It is good to see these beautiful fish making an appearance as their stocks are in danger of being depleted.

Ski boats
Ski Boats are now mostly concentrating on bottom fishing and the daga and geelbek salmon are the main target specie but marauding sharks make for some interesting fishing. General bottom fishing as far as ‘reds’ and rock cod are concerned is also a bit on the slow side but should start picking up. As far as game fish are concerned there are quite a few good size snoek and garrick on both north and south coasts but these fish seem to be targeted more by the Fishing Ski’s than ski boats.
