Fishing Report 26 April 2011

Terry Nell from Port Edward tells me just before the bad weather last week a variety of different fish species were being caught.
From the boats and skis there has been plenty action in our local Durban waters…
Last week the north to south current was humming, so I’m sure the current will push the dirty water from the rains away!

I trust you all had a relaxing and very unproductive weekend with all that wind, rain and swell! Very few fished for obvious reasons and so I don’t have too much recent news!

Terry Nell from Port Edward tells me just before the bad weather last week a variety of different fish species were being caught. Once the rain had stopped, reports of rock salmon from the estuaries started to come in. Visitors should brush up with their shad tackle as normally at this time of the year the shad come on the bite. Daiwa have just launched a very good combo for shad fishing.
I know the rock and surf competitive scene had a postal round over the weekend!

Most teams “scratched” for smaller fish in rocky areas trying to accumulate as many points as possible! Some kob were caught down Mpame way, Palm Beach and mission rocks also produced fish. A few clubs braved the big sea and fished the deep water points down the Transkei. Apparently a couple grey sharks in the forty kilo range were landed with the occasional hammer head in between!

On the South Coast I know there are pompano still being caught in the Sezela area but that’s as much as I’ve heard! The local Bluff boys are catching there yellow tail kingfish now, live baits and heavy tackle are necessities as these fish cut you off in the blink of an eye! Young Juan Pienaar from The Kingfisher managed to land a lovely fish on Tuesday around the five kilo range. His next throw he got a hiding by a bigger fish! This was after he waded out to a rock and threw a live bait in a hole at his feet…then you have to hold on for dear life otherwise you get cut off! That’s pretty exciting angling…

We often watch these over seas shows and view them in awe; the amount of fish, the size of the fish and techniques used… That I must say is the power of editing!!! If you fish hard enough and work out were the fish are in our local waters you can have some spectacular fishing!
The harbor had a couple cracking days last week but with all this rain and colder weather I think it will be back to slow going.

From the boats and skis there has been plenty action in our local Durban waters…

Towards the end of last week I had an absolute cracker day on my Ski; a yellow fin tuna of 16kg’s, another roughly the same size that got eaten in half by a shark just underneath my ski and then to round off my morning I landed another yellow fin of 27kgs. But that’s the highlights you are hearing from quit a few sessions of perseverance!!

There has been loads of yellow fin around and they are making a pig of themselves over all the tin sardines and frigates that are crowding the Durban waters…it’s been a cracker of a yellow fin season! The couta are still prolific but just like the yellow fin, it’s hard to get them out past the sharks! The boys targeting geelbek are having a struggle with the sharks as well!

The South Coast, I’m sure is still throwing plenty fish like it has all season, with all there rivers flowing out from the recent heavy rains they might struggle for a couple days!

Of course the main highlight for this weekend to come is the two major couta competitions; The Durban Ski Boat Club and the Pennington Ski Boat Club! The weather forecast is looking quit tasty for angling and I defiantly foresee great fish being caught over the two days! Considering the season we’ve been having, I can’t see it going any other way!
There probably will be in the region of five hundred boats out on the ocean between the two competitions… Those anglers fishing please keep it tidy, the actions of so many boats on the ocean can have quit a big impact on the environment!

Last week the north to south current was humming, so I’m sure the current will push the dirty water from the rains away!

Looking at the weather forecast; Saturday looks to have a little cheeky swell but very fishable conditions! Sunday looks to be a peach of a day with flat seas and light winds!

Good luck to those who are fishing in the competition…
