FISHING REPORT 24th JUNE 2011

Angling
Fishing conditions over the past weekend have been almost impossible due to some very bad winter weather which generated some massive seas sardines still stay elusive. The only confirmed reports are that they are still in the Port St Johns and Coffee Bay areas and had no intention of moving up the coast yet. The predicted cold fronts that hit the coast on the week-end have done little to get these fish moving. Terry Nel from Port Edward also reports that bad weather in the Port Edward area over the past weeks has caused bad sea conditions and fishing has been affected by this. However the ' Shad Run' is on and these fish are being found at most of the popular spots and fishermen are out there taking their catch.

No garrick as yet and many are trying for this game fish without results. Bronze bream are being found along the coastal reefs with other species in between. Sardine news is that the shoals are close and huge shoals have been sighted in the upper East Cape, so it could be any time now.
But this week comes along and out of nowhere we have settled seas and the sardines arrived and brought with it some very good fishing. On Monday / Tuesday mornings these little fish beached on the lower South Coast and a few nets were taken in the Hibberdene and Mtwalumi and Rocky Bay areas. Sards were also netted in the Kelso and Paddington main beach. Game-fish in the form of mostly garrick were caught here using the jig ‘n drop method.

Apparently one of the nets broke and a number of game fish were landed after these fish smashed into the released sardines. Fishing will now only get better and anglers who fish at night with fresh sardines can expect to get stuck into some fine fish. During the course of this weekend these fish can be expected in the Toti / Durban area.  I think this is going to be a cracker run, as there are wall to wall sards in the Port Grovner area.
The Convener of Selectors is proud to announce the following selections:-

Please refer to attachment.

Ski Boats in general are still having a good season with game fish and bottom fish. Most boats are now targeting couta and snoek. These fish are being caught all along our coastline and should be with us for some time still. The Bluff grounds have been steadily producing some good catches recently. The Warner beach area has steadily produced some good fish for the last couple of weeks and ski boats and fishing skis have caught some very good fish in this area. Bottom fishing is also as good as it can get. Charter boats are reporting some very good catches of reds and rock cod. Geelbek and the odd daga salmon are coming out on the south coast.

The good couta season that Fishing Skis have experienced over the past few months seems to have petered out somewhat and anglers over the past week have really battled to find fish.
