FISHING REPORT 27th MAY 2011
Angling
Terry Nel from Tacklenet in Port Edward reports that a variety of different fish species have been taken over the past week and the perfect conditions here are prompting more fishermen onto the shoreline. Shad have been plentiful in some places and the reef areas have produced rock cod, bronze bream, stone bream and rubber lips. Hound sharks and hammerhead sharks are also biting and news of the odd garrick caught are also coming in. The word on the street is of water temperatures and seaweed patches and cooler weather with some North Westerly winds is a sign that the favoured water temps could be here soon. Just as a matter of interest, boats catching bait fish are finding a few Natal Sardines in their catch also.
Ben Els, the Commode of Finnlands Angling Club, sent this report to The Kingfisher.
"On behalf of the committee and members, we take this opportunity to thank you and your organisation, for the support that we enjoyed over the weekend of our Silt Canal Bay Competition. Without your generosity, events like these would not be possible, and we hope that we can rely on you for our competition next year. The event was nail-biting, with a junior, Devlin Smith, taking the lead early on Saturday morning, with a grunter of 4.20kg, losing the lead to Jim Ormshaw later on Saturday, with a grunter of 4.65kg. The eventual winner, Allan Trevethan, then pipped Jim Ormshaw in the last hour of the competition, with a grunter of 4,85kg. Because of your generosity, we were able to award prizes right the way down to 15th place and still managed to have quite a few lucky draws.
Once again please accept our sincere gratitude and we look forward to next year."
Sean Bekker from SADSAA sent in this report about two events that took recently. The Jeffrey's Bay Vang 'n Tunnie and the Port Alfred Game fish Classic. A big thank you to both clubs for their fantastic hospitality and the Bols Brandy for the sponsorship and prizes.
Vang 'n Tunnie: The weather allowed for 2 days of fishing and some very decent catches were made including Kalahari's 89Kg yellow fin (boat: Bluewater, Skipper: Rian Raubenheimer)!
Port Alfred Game fish Classic: The weather also allowed for 2 days of fishing, although the seas were big on the 2nd day. Conditions were not very good out deep, which resulted in most of the boats concentrating inshore. Very good catches of cob were made with a wide variety of species arriving at the scales. Congratulations to Trevor Hansen, he is the first South African to be admitted to IGFA's prestigious Billfish Royal Slam Club... & congratulations to Rian Raubenhheimer on his PB big eye of 105.9Kg...
Ski Boats operating out of Durban are having a good season as far as gamefish is concerned. Couta are feeding well and boats that travel up to the Umdloti area are getting fair catches. Boats operating on and around the Aliwal shoal are also experiencing a great game fish season as there are steady catches of mainly couta but the odd wahoo and kingfish are also around. Charter boats operating out of Durban have reported that bottom fishing has picked up quite nicely. Quality 'Red fish' as well as some good size rock cod have been reported. It should also not be too long before the daga salmon and geelbek salmon make their annual appearance.
