Fishing Report - 3rd January 2008 |
KZN FISHING REPORT - 3 January 2008 Ideal hot and humid weather over the Xmas period made for some very good angling. Shad seems to be the main target specie at the moment for not only the holiday makers but for most locals as well.
ROCK & SURF - Durban area Local angler, Howard Westcott caught a magnificent 5kg shad on Boxing Day. Howard was fishing at Glenashley early in the morning and landed this great fish using Daiwa Saltiga 40 reel and chokka bait. Although most are still on the small side a few sizable fish are still around. places like Toti and Winkle rocks are steady performers but overcrowding makes it virtually impossible to fish.
ROCK & SURF - South Coast With consistent Easterly winds those anglers targeting flatfish are getting some very good results on both North and South Coasts. Sand sharks and skates are giving anglers some great fun as these fish can range from the 5 kg mark right up to the 50 kg mark, especially the sand sharks. Big deep water points on the south coast such as Green Point, Scottburgh and the Park Rynie area have recently yielded some very big sand sharks.
ROCK & SURF - North Coast On the North Coast the Tinley and Tongaat Long Beach area have also produced some very good results with these fish. Still on the North Coast, the Tugela area has recently fished very well on both edible and inedible fish. Those anglers targeting big fish have had good results with big diamond skates and zambezi sharks recently. The edible fish range has been just as good with anglers here catching some nice size lobotes, grunter, and smaller kob. The same can be said for the St Lucia and Mapelane areas where anglers have also had some good results.
SKI BOATS Besides the dorado, Ski Boaters fishing the inshore reefs for couta are finding things a little tough as the consistent Easterly winds have brought in some very cold water and have temporarily put these fish off the bite. Even places like the Aliwal Shoal have for over the past week or so performed quite badly. Westerly winds have been predicted for today so chances are good that the warmer water should push in and things will change rapidly.
E.S.A. SCHEDULES on TV The Extreme Sports Angling guys are at it again on Tuesday at 7pm (bass) Thursdays at 7.30pm (saltwater). This angling show is on DSTV’S Super Sports channel with reruns during the week, check your T V Guide for more details
THE UHTFC FRESH WATER REPORT Thanks to Bill Simson for supplying us with the UHTFC fresh water fishing reports last year, it is as always very informative. Fishing has been good in both rivers and dams, in spite of very hot weather. Best times to fish are early mornings and late evenings. The Umzimkulu is in very good condition and several fish over 1, 5 kg have been taken from it. There are many visitors from up country and bookings for the different waters have been brisk.
