Fishing Report 4 April 2011

It seems that there have been some fish around for the last week that I’ve been away…
The couta have also started to make an appearance on the lower South Coast, I’m sure they will be found in the Transkei now.
Richard Pillay managed to land a fifteen kilogram couta on a bonito slide bait from the shore on the weekend.

It seems that there have been some fish around for the last week that I’ve been away… I’ve been pinning my ears to the ground for the last couple days trying to pick up what’s happening on the fishing front and I’ve been pleasantly surprised!

Apparently the Shoal has turned on nicely with the wahoo, tuna and couta playing mayhem with the bonita shoals that have been sticking around there. The weekends are chaotic at best there, so try rather making a week day charge if you decide to go.
There has been plenty couta and tunny around in local waters so boat anglers need to come alive now and take full advantage. The mid to upper South Coast is also firing, in fact most places are producing fish…more fish then recent years which is wonderful to see!
Port Edward has however been pretty average… Dean tells me there are still a couple hound sharks around, some shad and the occasional big bronze bream. He managed to land a 10kg sea pike on a slide bonito off Splash Rock the other day.

The couta have also started to make an appearance on the lower South Coast, I’m sure they will be found in the Transkei now.

I’ve been hearing good things about the shore angling in Umkomass, good sized edibles with some browns in between; grunter, pompano, stumpnose ect…

In fact there has been quit a few edible’s all over for those who have been targeting them.

I went for a run on Sunday afternoon and all I could see were sporadic dark patches littering the glassy ocean; lots of baitfish bringing bonito with and tuna following and eating both the bait fish and bonito. Where there is bait there is fish, its pretty simple! There have been some good sized yellowfin tuna around in the twenty kilogram range with couta being ever present this season.

The dorado and billfish seem to be pretty quiet at the moment as I’ve had no reports of any fish.

Richard Pillay managed to land a fifteen kilogram couta on a bonito slide bait from the shore on the weekend. Richard was fishing in the Sheffield area when his slide bonito got picked up, after nearly getting cut off he landed a lovely slab of couta!

Up the North Coast hasn’t been all that productive. Just speaking to Barry Tedder, he tells me the fishing has slowed down with unfavourable conditions for the area. Two big sandy’s were landed just north of Richards Bay last week and a lovely GT (kingfish) of thirty five kilograms.

I snuck in a weeks leave last week to fish Santa Maria with a group of friends and Brandon Fords guiding company, Talon Safari’s. We had a lovely trip and plenty of laughs. We caught lots of small kingfish, a couple nice speckled snapper and knocked up a good species tally. There were plenty “firsts” for most of the anglers on the trip. One special memory that will be engraved in my mind for a very long time was a glassy morning off Inhaca island; no waves, crystal clear water and 4 GT’s the size of doors came in and smashed small kingfish at our feet in 2 foot of water. In four seconds they came in, demolished the fish we were targeting and disappeared as if nothing happened. Dalton and I were left speechless and feeling very insecure about the lightness of out tackle that was currently in our hands.

Anyway, moving back onto local affairs… looking at Windguru for the next angling session; This morning was suppose to be a cracker and tomorrow morning is suppose to be just as good! Get out on the paddle ski’s and boats. Sunday morning looks to be fishable but a little bumpy!
