Terry Nel reports that some reasonable size shad have been taken during the course of the week and there is news that blue skates are in the area.
On the Ski boat front there has been report of garrick been caught in the Tongaat area. There is still kob and geelbek been landed, when condition are right.
Bass fishing is also in full swing with good catches been made in all of our bigger dam's.

Weather patterns of late are spot on for this time of the year. Big Easterlies followed almost immediately by strong South Westerly winds accompanied with rain, however fish are still being caught in these conditions but overall things seem to be slowing down a bit. The week-end started with a strong north easter, followed by almost perfect weather on Sunday and a sea that in places resembled a lake. Fish were scarce and only a few lucky anglers managed to find some fish. The odd garrick came out along the South Coast but shad there is obviously the first prize bait but when scarce, live mullet netted from the rivers is an excellent alternative. Anglers fishing in the upper south coast areas are now landing some very good brusher in almost any condition. Most of these fish have been taken on crab or sea lice baits. Fishing in this area, Koot Skeepers landed a magnificent kob of 45kg last Saturday.

Further south in Port Edward, Terry Nel reports that some reasonable size shad have been taken during the course of the week and there is news that blue skates are in the area. River estuaries are quite, apart from the odd perch and river snapper, hopefully, this will improve as the water warms up. There have been plenty of stone bream around for the ultra-light tackle fisherman. The Transkei is still producing lots of edible fish kob, garrick and bronze bream. The Zululand beaches have fished extremely well again with lots of stumpies and pompano been caught. There have been some good size black fin sharks hooked and lost in the Kozi area. in the Durban area, Umgeni River seems to be the hot spot with some nice garrick been landed.

It is not long now, till the dorado start to make their appearance. Fishing Ski anglers dread this time of the year purely because of the adverse weather conditions which are experienced at this time of the year, however when a good window of weather presents itself, ski anglers can expect to get stuck into some nice snoek as well as garrick. It is now a waiting game for the summer game fish to arrive.

On the Fresh water side, the talking point is the tiger fish at Jozini Dam. Lots of tiger fish are been caught with some very big one's in the 4kg range. Most of these great fighting fish are caught on artificial.

The 5th annual bass classic at Mnini dam just outside Amanzimtoti will be held over the weekend of 01st and 2nd October 2011. It will be a two-man team per boat event, with cash prizes each day for the heaviest 5 fish bag, plus an overall largest bass cash prize for the competition. In addition, there will be lucky draw prizes as well. Cost to enter is R350 per boat and covers both days. Fly Fishing for trout has been good; especially in the rivers the water is clean but still a bit low. Small Nymphs seem to be the order of the day and reports from Sterkfontein Dam are that there is a small number of yellow's patrolling the shallows, but as the water temperature raises these numbers should increase.
The Kingfisher is hosting a shad competition for the biggest shad caught for the month of September. The heaviest shad will receive a 14’ Kingfisher Poseidon Gold Class 5pc Graphite Rod, valued at R1, 675.00, the second heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa SL 50SHK Reel, valued at R998.00 and third heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa Opus Plus 6000 Reel valued at R498.00. Please note that all shad (fresh) must be weighed at The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street, Durban during trading hours (8-5pm weekdays and 8-1pm Saturdays) and please remember there is a bag limit of four and the minimum size is 30cm. So far the winning fish is a shad of 3.006 kg’s caught by Paul Wintergreen in the Bluff area and second place, with a 2.418kg’s shad caught at Bats Centre goes to Yasmin Sheik, third prize is still up for grabs
