Fishing report 15 August 2011

For the rock and surf fishermen, there has been good catches of kob, shad and bronze bream all along the coast.
Terry Nel from Tacklenet in Port Edward reports that, down South they certainly have had their share of the cold and wet weather and the sea has at times been unfishable with cold weedy water lashing the shore.

Angling
For the rock and surf fishermen, there has been good catches of kob, shad and bronze bream all along the coast. The Zululand beaches have also produced some nice stump nose and large spot pompano (wave garrick). Unfortunately the cold front that blew last Friday put a damper on the weekends fishing, this week however it looks a lot better,(at this stage), with settled conditions.

Terry Nel from Tacklenet in Port Edward reports that, down South they certainly have had their share of the cold and wet weather and the sea has at times been unfishable with cold weedy water lashing the shore. Still shad have been on the bite most of the time and are now bigger than before and many are being caught late in the afternoons into the evening. As expected, kob have also come on the bite and many just making size have been taken.

Live baits are being used extensively and are producing garrick, larger salmon and a 14kg yellow fin tuna also joined the catch, of course at the very popular Splash Rock there at Port Edward. Further up the coast in the Palm Beach area, bronze bream are biting well and some really nice sized fish have been taken, regretfully most from one particular spot and it will take a long time for the area to 'restock' as few of the fish are being returned to the sea there.

The Bashee River Grunter Hunt is being fished over this weekend, the 12th, 13th &14th August, good luck to all the chaps attending.

This year’s shad run continues to be a bumper one and is the best in several years from all the way south in the Transkei up to northern Zululand, so The Kingfisher is hosting a shad competition for the biggest shad caught for the month of August then again in September. The heaviest shad for each month will receive a 14’ Kingfisher Poseidon Gold Class 5pc Graphite Rod, valued at R1, 675.00, the second heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa SL 50SHK Reel, valued at R998.00 and third heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa Opus Plus 6000 Reel valued at R498.00. Please note that all shad (fresh) must be weighed at The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street, Durban during trading hours (8-5pm weekdays and 8-1pm Saturdays) and please remember there is a bag limit of four and the minimum size is 30cm.

On the ski boat side there has been good reports of geelbek and dagga salmon boated along the North Coast as well as the Durban area. Martin, from Awesome Charters reports that Shelly Beach has been fishing well with plenty of bottom fish; on Monday morning Martin reports to have seen a very large shoal of dolphins heading north towards Durban. For more info about ski boat fishing in the Shelly beach area give Martin a call on 0820560 8991.
