Well the land breeze’s have started and winter is just around the corner…
Port Edward has been super quiet with a gang of guys off Splash Rock being treated to only one big pull over the weekend.
The Shoal had the Sappi water over it and so that put lots of anglers off from fishing there.
On the fresh water side of things I just got this in…
Angling
Well the land breeze’s have started and winter is just around the corner…before we know it there will be talk of sardines and we’ll be half way through the year!
Information has been lacking from this last weekend but I think that’s due to the fact the fishing was slow in comparison to the previous week!
Port Edward has been super quiet with a gang of guys off Splash Rock being treated to only one big pull over the weekend. There hasn’t been any boat action down there either…The Pennington Ski Boat Competition was held over the weekend, the fishing was average for most but some quality fish were caught!
Paul Sheppard’s team came second, they boated a wahoo of eighteen kilo’s, a kingfish of twenty six kilo’s, a sailfish which was released and a handful of other fish!
The Shoal had the Sappi water over it and so that put lots of anglers off from fishing there.
In general the South Coast is having a bumper game fish season… I haven’t had any news from the shore from the South Coast; calm weather conditions create clean water which makes fishing tough from the shore!
The Bluff boys have been targeting yellowtail kingfish with great results! The fish seem to range between four and nine kilo’s and is a huge challenge to land amongst the heavy structure in which they are hooked. Several were landed over the weekend… To handle these fish, make sure that your tackle is in tip top shape as these fish could take you to the cleaners. Your reel must have a good drag system with lots of power, reels like the Daiwa Saltiga (especially the Daiwa Saltiga 50 Hyper with a 15kg drag rating) and Saltist do the job very well.
The Durban area has been ultra quiet over the past week but that’s largely due to the fact the conditions haven’t been suitable.
A spearing friend of mine tells me the flat fish have almost all gone, with winter around the corner these skates disappear until next summer’s north easterly’s start to blow again.
The few people who have ventured up north tell me there are spinners up there but as small as they come and apparently some big java sharks were landed there last weekend.
And that’s unfortunately pretty much all the news I have from the shore angling side of things.
Durban offshore fishing was quiet in comparison to last weekend’s events… Umdloti did produce couta but no where near the numbers of the previous week. Yellow fin tuna are still around, Joss and I managed to land one each on Sunday in the thirteen kilo range with a third being chomped by a shark, well at least I got the head and my hook back! I’ve heard of a couple fish and even a saily coming out this week over the bait marks but the sharks aren’t far behind and are demanding some serious tax!
The current is humming North to South which is a very good thing for game fish… plus there are still loads of those “tin sardines” out there with the occasional shoal of red eye, this abundance of bait is what’s keeping the fish in our area! I can’t wait to see the results from the ski boat compo next weekend, as long as Mother Nature doesn’t throw us a curve ball like this weekend I’m sure there will be loads of fish caught!
I did notice there were lots of boats out last weekend, good fishing and practice for the Easter couta classic I’m sure are the main reasons!
There are geelbek on the deeper wrecks for those bottom anglers willing to travel, they seem to be hear year round… but no daga as yet!
I haven’t heard of any snoek action but I think nobody is fishing for them with all the other pelages around.

On the fresh water side of things I just got this in…
“Ron Wilson, the owner of Mnini dam just south of Amanzimtoti reports that whilst bass fishing at the dam remains good, most bass landed are between the 400 gram and 750 gram mark.
Of note however, is that large tilapia (bream/kurper) are being landed at there dam without much effort. Many of these good tasting fish are being targeted and a few in excess of 2 kilograms have recently been landed. These fish are taking small meps spinners as well as crank bait and are found mainly among the reed beds. |
