Barco’s De Macaneta, "Home of the Happy Fisherman”, lies only 35 kilometres to the north of Maputo near the town of Marracuene and a ferry ride across from the Nkomati River along the coast. Macanetta Island is the closest beach resort to Maputo in Southern Mozambique. This unique island is surrounded by the Nkomati River and the Indian Ocean with abundant plant- and bird life, and excellent fishing in the area. Here you find tropical pristine unspoilt beaches for 50 kilometres.


One could easily drive as far as Marracuene and onto the ferry departure point with a normal sedan car. Safe parking is available at the ferry departure point from where it is possible to arrange a transfer to the Lodge! The ferry takes up to 6 vehicles across the Nkomati River at a time (an unforgettable 10 minute journey), from where it is another 5km’s to the resort which is only accessible by 4 x 4 vehicle. The ferry operates from 07h00-19h00 daily.

The beach is a short 200 metre walk away...that’s a five minute stroll to the beach for swimming, tanning and beach parties and to watch the local fisherman pull in their nets! Boats, Jet ski’s, Quad bikes and rubber-ducks are welcome at Macaneta Lodge, although no vehicles are allowed onto the beach. At a nominal extra fee boats and Jet ski’s can be launched from our beach with our tractor. We offer boat charters for deep sea fishing and/or pleasure cruises.

Fresh fish and prawns can be bought from the local fishermen daily. Cold beer, cold drinks, ice and fresh bread (pao) is available on the island. Petrol and charcoal can be bought in Marracuene. Although there is fresh water available, it is advisable to bring enough of your own drinking water. There is a brand new shopping Mall in Maputo - which is also well worth a day trip.

Accommodation at Macaneta Lodge is offered in fully equipped timber chalets or in our shaded campsite. Our self catering chalets at Macaneta are fitted with fans, fridges and freezers, microwave ovens, pots, pans, plates, cutlery, linen and towels....and air-conditioned bedrooms! Each chalet has its own “Braai” (BBQ area) surrounded by natural bush to give you privacy. Camping at Macaneta is offered in Camp sites that have open kitchen facilities with power outlets that can be arranged when booking.
