No substitude for experience!!?? 1 Year ago Karma: 0
Hello to all

Now here is one for every one to ponder on and think about!

Over the last few weeks there has been a few threads where members were quite upset about certain posts on spots that were producing fish.

Here is my 2 cents worth:

I am newish in the R&S game, but been relatively successful. My fishing apprenticeship was served on the commercial fishing grounds and this is what I found. When fish go on the BITE anyone and I mean anyone can catch! The days that they are feeding normally and being skelm as usual, it is just the guys with the experience that end up catching. I'm talking about the guy that can "FEEL IT IN HIS BONES", where or what or how to target the fish.

The reason I thought of writing this is because I was fishing up at Struis last week. I arrived rather late the afternoon and when walking down to where like to fish, the condition looked great to me and I had this "excited" feeling about my luck. I passed several other anglers on their way home, all returning empty handed, and bitching that nothing was biting. As I walked past the areas they claimed to have fished, areas that I have caught very good fish at - I looked at the spots and given the conditions - I would not have stopped there on that day to fish. I walked down until I found an area that looked good to me and landed my first fish on my second cast and then caught 3 more fish in 3 casts and eventually released another 2 by the time it had got dark.

So for those guys that are lucky enough to have that "feeling" about where to fish or those guys that have the years behind of trying and failing and then eventually succeeding - that cannot be bought with any amount of money or learnt by tagging along for a few trips or even browsing on the internet.

Another determining factor is also self confidence, if you head out feeling positive and great, your work rate is better, your bait presentation is better and will naturally be more alert and not miss that skelm bite that may or may not happen. In 1989 we were catching snoek at St Helena Bay and it was here that I was learnt the biggest lesson of my fishing career. We were on a 3 man boat and we were all using red no4 snoek spinners, we turned on a piece and ...vas! We were up to 70 -80 a man out the shoal and I got bitten off. I proceed to put on a plain chrome no4 and not a fish!!!!! My other 2 buddies were throw for throw 3 fathoms from the boat. I started bitching, bitched so much that one of them stopped fishing cut off his red spinner, gave it to me, took my chrome spinner and proceed to catch even quicker that with the red spinner he exchanged with me. Now if that is not confidence ....

As I said earlier my 2 cents worth!

God bless

That's what I tell myself when I pull out my beat up but trusty Penn reels and cheap spinning reels that sound like its grinding on sandpaper despite its last cleaning. But, I rarely get skunked anymore on live or dead bait. Getting better with artificials too. Long way to go.
